Two women die in crash on Colorado's icy roads

The winter months can lead to treacherous roadways. It is important for drivers to be vigilant of the possible changing conditions on the roads and adjust their driving accordingly. Auto accidents can lead to serious injuries with lengthy recoveries and in some tragic instances, can lead to death.

Sadly, two sisters died earlier this month, near Alamosa, Colorado, when their vehicle collided with a semitrailer. A Colorado State Patrol spokesperson says the car accident happened on Colorado Highway 160, roughly three miles west of Alamosa, shortly before 4:45 p.m.

Woman allegedly drags tow truck driver to his death

Jury selection began recently in Colorado Springs for the trial of a woman alleged to have dragged a tow truck driver for more than a mile in February 2011. Prosecutors say the tow truck driver was hooking up a sport utility vehicle to tow it out of an illegal parking space when the woman who owned the SUV got in the vehicle and drove off.

Witnesses to the fatal car accident state that the man's leg became tangled in a tow cable he had connected to the SUV. The man was dragged behind the vehicle for over a mile before his legs were "severed" from his body.

Denver woman arrested for hit-and-run accident

A 21-year-old Denver woman was arrested this month for allegedly hitting two pedestrians two days prior and then fleeing the scene of the accident.

The woman is being held on investigation of leaving the scene of a car accident involving serious bodily injury, driving without a license, driving with a license under restraint and a lane violation. Denver police booked her into the Downtown Detention Center, where her bond is $5,000.

Windsor boy dies in car accident

No one is prepared to lose a loved one or friend at such a young age, especially when the young person is about to graduate and move on to the next stage of his or her life. It is generally a time for celebration. Tragically, a 17-year-old Windsor High School junior died earlier this month in a two-car crash on Colorado Route 257, near U.S. Route 34. Now, instead of celebrating his next rite of passage as an adult, a community will be burying a dear family member and friend.

According to a trooper with the Colorado State Patrol, the car accident occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. on January 18, just west of Greeley, Colorado. The trooper says a southbound 2000 silver Ford F-250 crossed into the northbound lane unexpectedly and collided head-on with a 2009 white Toyota Camry.

Boy, 14, flees police at 100 MPH in stolen vehicle

A 14-year-old Lamar, Colorado, boy allegedly led police on a high speed chase earlier this month before crashing into two parked cars. His 17-year-old passenger died in the car accident.

According to the Colorado State Patrol incident report, the chase began when a Granada police officer spotted a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro driving recklessly on U.S. Highway 50 in Granada, Colorado. When the officer tried to pull the vehicle over shortly after 9:30 p.m., the 14-year-old driver of the Camaro fled.

Deputy arrested for drunk driving following crash

A 33-year-old Douglas County Sheriff's deputy was arrested after he allegedly caused a New Year's Day crash on Interstate 25. According to a spokeswoman for the Castle Rock Police Department, the off-duty officer was issued a summons for investigation of drunken driving, careless driving and DUI following the car crash.

The police report says the deputy was driving north on I-25 near Founder's Parkway about 11:30 a.m. on January 1, 2012, when he stopped his personal vehicle in the middle lane of the interstate.

Colorado woman charged in fatal crash pleads not guilty

A 34-year-old woman recently pleaded not guilty to allegations that her negligence caused a February car crash that resulted in the death of five people in Thornton, Colorado. Prosecutors charged the woman with child abuse and five counts of criminally-negligent homicide.

According to court documents, the woman was driving in Thornton on February 17, 2011 when her car hit a median. The collision sent her car flying into a sport utility vehicle containing a family of five. The car accident killed all five people in the other vehicle.

40-year-old man arrested in fatal hit-and-run

Aurora Police arrested a 40-year-old Centennial man earlier this month. Officers suspect he was involved in a fatal hit-and-run car accident Dec. 3. Police are holding the man, a medical doctor, on suspicion of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and careless driving resulting in death. The court set his bond at $10,000.

A 55-year-old Aurora man died Dec. 3 after a gold colored SUV, allegedly driven by the Centennial man, hit him. According to Aurora police, the man was trying to cross South Havana Street near Mississippi Avenue shortly before 8:00 p.m. He was standing in the median of the road when the northbound SUV collided with him. The driver of the SUV did not stop after the car crash.

NTSB recommends banning electronic devices

The National Transportation Safety Board wants drivers to cease the use of their cellphones while driving, but Colorado officials are not so sure. Earlier this month, the board recommended states uniformly ban drivers from using any electronic devices in moving automobiles. If the NTSB has its way, the proposed ban will include cellphones, even those using hands-free technology.

At this time, 35 states, including Colorado, currently ban texting while driving. Ten states ban cellphone use in moving vehicles.

Two teens dead, two injured in Colorado crash

An 18-year-old Jefferson County, Colorado man had a blood alcohol level of 0.228 percent when he drove his sport utility vehicle into a tree on Nov. 6, the Jefferson County coroner says. That is nearly three times Colorado's legal limit of 0.08 percent.

The man and a 17-year-old Lakewood girl died in the accident. Two other passengers in the man's SUV were seriously injured in the car crash. According to the Jefferson County coroner's report released on Dec. 6, the man had his seat belt on at the time of the car accident. He died of blunt force trauma to the head.
