An 18-year-old Jefferson County, Colorado man had a blood alcohol level of 0.228 percent when he drove his sport utility vehicle into a tree on Nov. 6, the Jefferson County coroner says. That is nearly three times Colorado's legal limit of 0.08 percent.

The man and a 17-year-old Lakewood girl died in the accident. Two other passengers in the man's SUV were seriously injured in the car crash. According to the Jefferson County coroner's report released on Dec. 6, the man had his seat belt on at the time of the car accident. He died of blunt force trauma to the head.

The girl, who was riding in the front seat, also died of blunt force trauma to the head, neck and upper body. She was also wearing her seat belt. A 19-year-old man has undergone several surgeries to repair injuries from the crash.

According to Wheat Ridge police officers, the man's vehicle was traveling between 63 mph and 77 mph in a 25-mph zone. The vehicle flew through the air for more than 40 feet before striking a tree.

Police officers suspect all four teenagers were at a party at an apartment prior to the crash. Neighbors told police they spotted an empty beer box at the site of the wreck.

The Jefferson County district attorney has not filed any charges in the case. However, an 18-year-old man who lives at the apartment where the alleged party took place may face charges of underage possession of alcohol and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

A 26-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman may be charged with procuring alcohol for a minor. They may also face charges for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

As police work to seek justice in criminal court, the victims and their families may choose to seek compensation in civil court.
