Aurora Police arrested a 40-year-old Centennial man earlier this month. Officers suspect he was involved in a fatal hit-and-run car accident Dec. 3. Police are holding the man, a medical doctor, on suspicion of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and careless driving resulting in death. The court set his bond at $10,000.

A 55-year-old Aurora man died Dec. 3 after a gold colored SUV, allegedly driven by the Centennial man, hit him. According to Aurora police, the man was trying to cross South Havana Street near Mississippi Avenue shortly before 8:00 p.m. He was standing in the median of the road when the northbound SUV collided with him. The driver of the SUV did not stop after the car crash.

The impact pushed the man into the southbound lanes of traffic. A blue Toyota Corolla ran over the man and dragged him roughly a block before a witness stopped the driver of the Corolla. Aurora police say the woman did not realize she had hit the man, and is not expected to face criminal charges.

Emergency workers took the man to a local hospital, but doctors were unable to keep him alive. He died of severe head trauma, according to the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office.

Police say parts left at the scene match the doctor's 2007 Toyota Sequoia. They impounded the vehicle Dec. 7 and traced it to the doctor. He turned himself in to police nine days later.

A spokesperson for the Aurora Police Department says the department is pleased its officers were able to solve the hit-and-run case so quickly. The families of victims often have to wait months or years before officers solve such cases, he says.
